As the seasons change, so too do the “wandering” thoughts of employees. The change of season marks a time in many people’s lives when they feel it is time to change jobs or careers. The weather has that kind of effect on people. Try and recognize the significance of the changing seasons by making your employees feel special, especially in the winter when everyone starts slowing down.
Unfortunately, most roofers face slowdowns with the winter weather hits. If you’re forced to let your talented salespeople, technicians, and re-roof crews sit at home without work, they’re imaginations can get the best of them. Maybe they consider going to work for that other contractor across town? Or maybe they’ll go into business for themselves?
Eliminate all of that negative thinking! Do your best to keep your people busy year-round. (A great way to do that is to sell maintenance agreements—yes, you can sell them in roofing. Hundreds of Roofers’ Success International members sell them every day.) If you can’t keep them busy year-round, let your people know how much you appreciate them!
How do you do that? Show your people that you appreciate them all year! Have a special breakfasts or luncheons at least once a month! Every quarter, have a company get together at the shop where everyone can bring their families and get to know one another. Make your company feel like a family.
Maybe, at these companywide get-togethers, introduce a new incentive plan for your employees. Even better, roll out a profit sharing plan! By giving your team even a small taste of the profits, they’ll work harder for you. By rolling out the plan in front of your employee’s families, they’ll become a fan of you! Having a fan at home always helps keep employees stay with you!
Even if you don’t want to do a profit-sharing plan, have gifts for kids and spouses as well as small bonuses during that fourth quarter party—you know, when it’s cold and business can be slow. That’s the most important time you want your team thinking positively about you and your company!
